Anyone who likes the Vampire genre but wants more than just; vampire finds female and falls in love THIS IS THE BOOK!! The main character Vampire or Vricolakas as they go by is Lucan the assassin for the high Lord. Samantha is a human detective with a unique ability. I don't want to give more spoilers; so I inadvertently read this book first and it's actually the third in the series but it was such a great book I went back and bought the whole series so that I can start from the beginning and let's just say I have 're read this series many times over and I have them in E book, paperback and now have some in Hard Cover. Lynn Viehl needs to give me more Lucan!!!! But then again I love the entire series and I know everyone I have recommended this series has also enjoyed it!

I started reading Lynn Viehl by accident and got hooked on the first Darkyn book. "Dark Need" carried on the excellence that made the first two in the series so good. I hope many more tales of the Darkyn follow.
Dark Need, the third installment in Viehl's Darkyn series, finally stars the evilly delicious Lucan, former Templar knight and assasin of the vampires. He can kill with his touch, is trained in fighting with nearly every weapon, and when he gets grumpy glass shatters.Plus he's the king of Florida's vampires. Oh, yeah, he loves women, too. They are like a sultry smorgasbord for him, which he enjoys to the fullest. Then some freak kills his former mistress and Detective Samantha Brown enters his life to solve the case.

Sam is a no fuss homicide detective with a strange gift, She can read the blood of the dead with her hand. A neat trick to gain after nearly dying herself. With her attacker attempting to come back into her life, a freaky killer on the loose, and Lucan the strange new nightclub owner all vying for her attention she needs every gift she can use.

Sam and Lucan are fantastic together. Watching their stormy relationship play out is entrancing. BUT, the problem is we don't get to see enough of it! Their story gets no more time in this book than the machinations of Michael Cyprian and head boss Richard and possibly less time than John Keller and his trials with the Brethren. If you haven't read the other books in the series, If Angels Burn and Private Demon, you will be completely lost in the vampire world and its counterpoint of the creepy priests. The book gets very creepy at times with the doings of a mass murder out after Lucan.

Everything is unmasked at the end, but comes to a jarring cliffhanger that won't be resolved till atleast the next book is released in April '07. Sam and Lucan don't even get an epilogue and only end up together on the last page. I want more of this couple. It is a romance afterall!
Initially, I had only planed to read the first one (If Angels Burn) and this one but after reading this one I was convinced that purchasing the second one (Private Demon) was not a mistake; it just took longer to arrive in the mail. I so loved Sam and Lucan's romance. They are perfect for eachother; both even had a rat faced person in their lives. Sam's rat face guy was tormenting her while Lucan's rat face girl was distracting him. Very interesting. Lucan is the ultimate, sexy, bad boy type; completely misunderstood, feared, lonely and the bearer of unrequited love <swoon>. His powers are awesome too; shattering glass whenever he is upset and the ability to kill anyone with the touch of his hands. Usually, I love reading about Alex and Michael (from the first book -If Angels Burn) but honestly I only wanted to read more about Sam and Lucan's explosive love affair; and the sections dealing with Jon (the ex-priest and Alex's brother) nearly drove me crazy but I understand that it is all a part of the story and everything tied in nicely at the end. As much as I loved reading the first one and as much as I am enjoying reading the second one, this one (the third book) is my favorite one so far. I really do hope that Sam and Lucan are mentioned in the next ones as well.
Excellent. The story of the Darkyn, who are vampiric Knights Templars, continues with Book 3. Lucan is in control of the Darkyn of Florida and still antagonistic to Michael Cyprian the overlord of America. Richard is Michael's and everyone's Lord and Master. All three intertwine with varying goals and objectives. Totally enmeshed and somewhat confused are former priest John Keller, his sister Dr. Alexandra Keller Cyprian, and a police detective Samantha Brown.

Of course no-one is talking to any of the humans, let alone one another. This leads to an interesting tour de force at the end, where everything is revealed. Wowzer! It is best to start with the first book, "If Angels Burn"; then the next, "Private Demon" to fully understand the actions of the people involved. Absolutely a favorite series. I have it in paperback and now I'm repurchasing and reading them all on kindle.
