Britt Hayes has been dating for the last year and a half, and these dates have been so collectively and independently dreadful that she knew she must document them for posterity's sake. I SHOULD JUST NOT is a hilarious, frank, existential look at the world of online dating from the perspective of one woman in Austin who just wants to hang out with someone, eat pizza and watch THE WIRE.

This is an interesting book for several reasons.

First, as a man, it's an insightful look into the mind of a single woman at times on the prowl and at times searching for a real connection.

Second, the book is mostly funny on the terms that it intends to be funny on. She's met some awful men.

Third, the book is an interesting study in how someone can be blind to herself. In analyzing some of her online correspondence, and in reviewing her personal encounters, Ms. Hayes repeatedly becomes incensed when entitled men imply that she ought to be grateful for the opportunity to date them. In my experience, people are often very sensitive to the offenses that they themselves dole out. After making out with a guy she really likes, Ms Hayes tells him that she'll check her schedule to see when she has room to see him again. !!! In between stories about awful dates, Ms. Hayes has story after story of men she liked who won't call her again, and she can't figure out why. It seems clear to a disinterested party that she is conveying something to these men that's making it clear to them she's not interested, or she's not interested on terms that are mutually interesting. I would guess that she's conveying that she thinks she's pretty great and they're lucky to get to spend time with her, because that's pretty much how she comes across in her own voice.

The way in which Ms. Hayes evaluates the behavior of some men she dates is also revealing. She thinks that she's illustrating how some men's behavior is clearly unacceptable but she's really illustrating how she wants them to conform to a set of behaviors that she finds desirable. Basically everyone does this at some point but it's nice to confirm that I'm not the only one.

All in all it was an entertaining read for these reasons.

I saw an ad for this book on a pretty good site. Very funny and honest book. I would definitely recommend it.
This book is a hilarious and enlightening read on what it's like to be a single, smart lady. Hayes' stories are probably familiar to plenty of women, but so many take a truly bizarre turn. Also if you're out there, movie people, please make a wonderful film of this, because I laughed my ass off more than a few times.
when I purchased this book, I thought it would just be a few good laughs, but I soon realized it's more complex than that. Equal parts hilarity, sadness, and feeling a little voyeuristic at times (especially since I know the author in real life). I found myself both sympathizing with her because of my own OK Cupid horror stories, and wanting to slap her out of making the same bad decisions over and over. A brutally honest look at one single Austin girl's search for whatever it is we're all looking for. Spoiler alert We still haven't found it. Thanks Bono.
Didn't enjoy this writer at all.
Ms Hayes tells a compelling story of the hazards of online dating. A very honest tale of one persons quest for love. Lots of funny stories and a few scary ones. Ms Hayes has a great wit to telling her stories. Highly recommended
As a reader, this was well-written and fun, in a style like if Kathleen Kelly hadn't found Joe Fox but wrote about her experiences trying to find someone. (Hopefully she is OK with this comparison.) As a dude, it was interesting to see dating from a woman's experience. As someone less than lucky in love, misery loves company, or something.

I appreciated Britt's introspection and her willingness to allow the world to follow her journey of just not. This was a good two-and-a-half hour read and at $5 it's the same as a movie rental, except you own it so you can read it again for free when you need a pick-me-up like that. Definitely worth it.
Read while drinking a beer, and it'll feel like you're at the notorious bar with Britt where she has had so many bad dates. Funny, real, and also touching on the many challenges and pitfalls (like potential stalkers, or dudes who walk out on you while you're composing perfect exit lines for yourself) of modern dating.
