New illustrated adventure novel for young readers reveals special bond between a girl and her dog. “Lucky Dog” follows an 11-year-old girl and her best friend as they learn the true value of loyalty and friendship.

Did you know that Queen Mary was a kleptomaniac? Or that the Empress Elizabeth of Russia couldn't spell?

Emily Locke does. She knows all kinds of crazy things about European Royalty. She just doesn't know how to fix her miserable life.

Moved to a new home in Emerald Lake by her grieving mother, Emily has to fend for herself. She has no friends and hates her new school. Skateboarding home from school one day, Emily finally finds a best friend--a dog she names Lucky. Together, she and Lucky have many hair-raising adventures including one in the mountain wilderness that nearly costs Emily her life. It is up to Lucky, the late Princess Diana and Emily's new friends to save her.

My main issue with this book is that it's being marketed as "perfect for 9-13 year olds." I bought this for my 10 year old daughter who adores dogs. After reading it, I decided it wasn't suitable for her because of the heavy subject themes of depression, death, loss, intense grief, alcoholism, parental neglect and verbal abuse. Since the main character was only 11 years old (she turned 12 toward the end of the book), it seems unlikely that teens would be interested in the story, yet I think it would be depressing and possibly disturbing for younger children. (As an adult, I thought it was very sad most of the way through the story!) I realize some children have a hard life and might be helped by reading about others in similar situations, but honestly, it seemed rather unbalanced with the huge number of negative elements in the story. There were some examples of kindness being shown, however, and the author did attempt to show healthier ways to handle grief and depression.

No doubt the author can write, her book just wasn't for us.

Lucky Dog eBook Laurie Ezpeleta Melissa Glenn Reviews

This is an uplifting story as seen from a "tom boy" preteen girls view. It reminds me of what my Grandaughter might do if put in this situation. Makes me feel closer to her...very good book and great for anyone to read.
I enjoyed this book immensely! It would be a great read for an early teen and an especially good book to read WITH an early teen. Life lessons such as loss and grief are handled with grace. We are completely immersed in the life of this bright, resourceful and very independent girl and her remarkable dog in a story filled with action, humor and tenderness.
I chose this rating because it was a very good book and it was asome and I liked it loved it and it was the best book I ever read
This is the best book I have ever read! Adventurous and very exciting. I was chewing my nails through it all!
'Lucky Dog' written by Laurie Ezpeleta masterfully reels the reader right into the heart and mind of 12 year old Emily. It not only teaches life lessons, it also contains facts that enlighten and chuckle. I learned things, even as an adult! It is very entertaining, quick paced and keeps your interest from start to finish.
I read this book once and fell in love! But then my kindle died, so when I found this app I was so excited to have this book back.
I read it all on one day, and felt the same suspense as before. This book never gets old!
As a Grandma, I enjoyed reading "Lucky Dog" last night. With tears in my eyes at points, I kept reading to the end to find out what would happen next. Girls will enjoy following Emily and Lucky's adventures. And they'll learn things like it's OK to be different; being an independent thinker pays off; there are better ways to handle emotions than getting in trouble at school; and how to catch crawdads!
