Surviving Survivalism How to Avoid Survival Culture Shock edition by Sheila Gendron Dan Gendron Religion Spirituality eBooks

This book was both interesting and frustrating at the same time. The interesting part was the authors' challenge to would be survivalists. Using thier own experiences the authors make it clear that having a well equiped bug out bag and a bug out plan are not the same as knowing how to survive off grid. The required skill set can only be learned over time, by living the life. The stark descriptions of thier life should make anyone considering off grid living think long and hard about the reality of day to day existence. A good deal of survivalist literature focuses on tools and techniques without examining attitudes and preconceived notions about a sustainable lifestyle. The authors here make a good attempt to force the reader to consider his/her preconcieved ideas and motivations.

The frustrating part was that the descriptions of necessary skills and the lists of necessary things were lacking a certain depth. They pointed out what you would need without really telling you how to get there.

The book was overall a worthwhile read but was a little pricey for what it contained.

Surviving Survivalism How to Avoid Survival Culture Shock edition by Sheila Gendron Dan Gendron Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I think this could be very beneficial to someone or a family surviving off the grid. However the person who wrote it must not be off the grid completely or else they were and came back(why?) Where are you going to read this, when the batteries on your dwindle? You will use your power for things of necessity. A hardback book or paperback would be more worth the while. ? come on.... really? what happens if you drop it and break the screen?
This is a book on the mindset behind true survivalism, written by a couple who have actually lived it. After reading an article recently by the author on The Survival Mom's blog I purchased this book- eager to hear the story behind their self sustainable lifestyle in the New Mexico mountains.

The book really helped to clarify our thoughts and goals about sustainability. Do we want to give up everything the world has to offer? Are we willing to quit our job to live in the mountains? Do we truly believe the potential security of living apart from society outweigh the benefits that we enjoy now? It was helpful to be reminded that sustainability is a journey that can begin through small daily choices even while remaining embedded in modern society, and I was pleased to see how affordably the authors built their energy collection system- though more detail would have been appreciated.

I was disappointed, however, to find that a good 2/3 of the book is quite radical rhetoric and justifications for choosing a sustainable lifestyle and the rest briefly covers some 'how to's' of surviving off the grid. The authors spend a lot of time spewing hatred and distrust of corporate America and modern infrastructure, yet still use the internet to publish their e-book, purchase tools at big box stores or online and admit to using unbleached white flour for baking when they are feeling 'just too lazy' to grind the grains.

As someone who actually shares the author's sentiment towards our current civilization and our gloomy economic future, I was put off by a lot of the book and all their thinly veiled efforts to "sell me" their lifestyle. The book would have been more helpful if it had been truly about the mindset behind the difficulties and challenges of survivalism and the author's personal journey towards "shangri-la", or a book about the daily how-to's of hardcore survivalism. Instead, this is a patchwork of topics covering everything from the government's attempts at brainwashing our children to excerpts of other blogs and vague tips on building a solar panel.

This book was a good first attempt, and I look forward to reading more from them in published works with greater clarity of vision in the future.
