From This Moment On by Lynn Kurland is set in the 1200s. Alienore has a stepmother who is, of course, wicked. Marie decides to marry Alienore off to the worst man she can find - Colin, the Butcher of Berkhamshire. In a panic, Alienore flees, disguising herself as Sir Henri the knight. She finds work at a neighbor's house, watching over a young woman there. She's safe for two years.

Unfortunately for Alienore, soon that woman is engaged to Colin - and soon Alienore is in Colin's household. For a full half of the book Colin thinks Alienore is a young squire. He's disappointed with her complete lack of sword skills and takes it on himself to train her. He becomes attracted to her and fights this allure. Finally, when he realizes she is a girl, he's relieved.

So half of the story involves Alienore constantly trying to hide her gender from everyone, although it appears that nearly everyone around her beside Colin figures it out quickly. Then the second half is Colin knowing she's female, trying to figure out why she's hiding, why she's being threatened, and what is going on.

This makes the story less a "romance" and more of an "adventure" story. I suppose during the story there is a VERY slow, gradual thawing of Alienore towards Colin, but Colin is so dense that he is barely aware of what is going on around him. You often don't have descriptions of what the world looks like, so it's hard to fully envision the world that is around the characters. Even parts of the plot which are key, like the training, are barely described. There is also an issue of certain words being over-used; it starts to drag down the reading.

Colin is crude, smelly, and often seems almost a dullard. Alienore seems weak, nervous, and she trips over herself. There just isn't a lot of chemistry here. Colin grunts out "I have manly business" while he bangs on the table for his food.

I normally love swordswomen but Alienore flinches when she touches metal and often seems scared of her own shadow. Colin dismisses her as pitiful when he thinks she's a boy - and then praises her as amazingly strong just because she's now a girl. Apparently girls dissolve into "womanly tears" and boys should never flinch.

It's odd, because there are a few supporting characters who are quite engaging. Somehow that same level of appealing attention isn't paid on the two main characters. And then the story is drawn out much longer than necessary with a "wooing" stage. The book could definitely have been tightened up, and the characters polished a bit, to make this gain more stars.

This book transports you to a magical time. Wonderful read. I do love Lynn's books and have all of the McLead and the DiPaget series. I especially love the time travel ones. I feel like the characters are well defined and are not shallow people. In addition, Lynn does not keep repeating herself (like Danielle Steele) and gives us credit for having a brain. I feel that the story line is amazing and progresses thoughtfully and accurately. As the characters develop, you can actually feel what they are going through. I love these books!
This is one odd romance. Its hard for me to even describe the positive aspects of it because there are so many negative ones. Yes the story is slow moving, has an ugly hygiene-challenged hero and a heroine who jumps from being brave to meek at a glance. And to top it all off, its g-rated. Kissing is all you'll read about. Really who the heck would want to read a book like that?

I couldn't help myself. I loved This is all I ask so much that I had to read the sequel about the Butcher of Berkhampshire. The funny thing is that I really liked this book especially towards the last quarter (if you can last that long). Colin was hysterical with his manly wooing. He had a ruthless reputation to consider and so treating Ali'nore like a man was important because in his mind that was the greatest compliment he could give her. Like taking her to the lists and training in the pouring rain was akin to giving her flowers. Or telling her that she was intelligent because she didn't dance as well as the others. LOL! It was so funny when he was clearly nervous about their wedding night and kept denying it. And then when Ali'nore tells him in a round about way that she cares for him Colin gets all teary but blames the dirt getting in his eyes. So cute. His irrational fear of heights is funny too. Who would think that such a dangerous man would have such an achilles heel? And then when and why he faints towards the end of book -that was really sweet. I just loved that.

This may be the most unromantic couple (on the surface) that I've ever read about. But their secret is safe with me. All the things they didn't say were obvious in their actions. Though its a strange romance, I really enjoyed many parts of this book.
I really wanted to give this book 4 stars because it was a really good story with a really great hero but I couldn't. I couldn't because for almost half the book, from 50% to 90%, I absolutely HATED the heroine. I got why she ran away in the beginning but what I didn't get is why she didn't try to make herself a more believable boy once she decided she was going to hide that way. And that wasn't the worst thing. After she got to know the hero (FOR TWO MONTHS!) she still was scared of him! After people who knew him told her she should trust him, she was still scared of him! After he defended her from others and protected her, she was still scared of him! After he showed himself to be an honorable man, she was still scared of him! It became more than ridiculous and took away some if my enjoyment of the story. Other than that, it was great.
