Laura Kaye is hit and miss with me. This one was a miss. Story moved along smoothly, but I just couldn't buy it. Marco still having issues after returning from Afghanistan hasn't seen Alyssa in a few years. They see each other when she shows up to work at the bar where he's working. He's all up and down, hot and cold bi-polar on her. Alyssa's been pining away in love with Marco for years...ok, believable. But when they finally hook up (once and only once) they're off again, then it's will you "Marry Me" (Really! He sings the Train song to her) and BAM - we have an HEA, The End. WTH!?!!? I wanted several nice long heated romantic scenes where I got the sense they were an actual couple. Or to quote another Train song (yes, I'm a fan) "let's skip the how you been and get down to the more than friends at last", not to have left me high and dry, (pun intended ;-) all sexually deprived. They do the business once and the guy's flakey throughout the bk and then he wants to get married?!? No, no, no.I liked Marco and Alyssa, it's just their characters/story didn't have enough time for a believable HEA.

Her Forbidden Hero A Heroes Novel The Hero Book 1 edition by Laura Kaye Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I've read all of Laura Kaye's published work up to date, and I know well enough now that anything new from her I must read right away! I savored every bit of Her Forbidden Hero. Ms. Kaye shines again in creating a story with the right balance of angst, steam, and heartfelt moments, while introducing a well-developed cast of characters with a familial sense of quality.
Meet Alyssa Scott. She's fresh out of college, stubbornly independent, adores her older brother Brady, and has been in love with her brother's best friend for a long time. Marco Vieri...holy hotness *fans self*!!! What can I say about him? With brown hair, blue eyes, long fingers, and a lean-chiseled body, Marco is a loyal friend through and through. He was in the army special forces and nightmares torture him every night. He hasn't seen Alyssa in a few years, but now notices how she's all grown up when she starts working in the same bar. Both of them have changed and both want to protect one another, but is it OK to give into their feelings?
One of my favorite aspects of this story is the dynamic relationship between Marco, Alyssa, and Brady. Through memories and flashbacks, we find out why these three ended up growing close, and why they care and look out for each other. Marco and Alyssa...whew! They butted heads at times, but that's because it's obvious they love each other in more ways than one. These two seriously had to sort out their feelings, especially Marco, who has issues he doesn't want Alyssa to know about. It all just makes this into a friends-to-lovers story one should not miss! I was left smiling so big my cheeks started to hurt!
Oh, and should I mention Marco plays the guitar and drives his grandfather's black '67 Mustang? He takes very good care of it too. Man, I love a talented, sexy guy with a hot, classic car! Now, do you understand why I need to fan myself? Holy hotness, indeed! )
This story really grabbed me in – enough to read it until 200 am to finish it. This is one of Laura Kaye’s earliest books and you can see the start of her style of book and especially her characters.
The story centers on Alyssa, survivor of a rough childhood and recent college graduate. She’s come home to try to kindle a romance with her big brother’s best friend Marco. Marco and Alyssa’s brother Brady basically raised her after Alyssa’s mom died and her father turned combative and harmful to her and Brady. Alyssa has always had a thing for Marco, but Marco lives by the “bro code” of never anything with your friend’s sister.
Marco is still recovering physically and mentally from an attack while he was a Special Forces Sgt in Afghanistan. He hates that he has not fully recovered and he feels guilty for his team members that did not survive.
There is a lot of angst and trauma as the two of them go back and forth with their relationship. A great number of misunderstood and poorly handled conversations create the drama. But in the end it’s a sweet story of overcoming and finding true love. I absolutely loved the “cheesy” romantic ending – it brought tears to my eyes! Since I have read, and loved, the author’s Hard Ink series, this story felt quite a bit like those stories, but without all the suspense and surprise twists and turns.
I just finished HER FORBIDDEN HERO for the second time...
immediately after finishing ONE NIGHT WITH A HERO ...for the second time, and in reverse order.
After reading a number of mysteries, detective and horror novels, I always need some old fashioned romance.
With hundreds of unread romance books on my , I was surprised to find myself rereading the "HERO" books by Laura Kaye.
Both books are so well written and edited (a huge plus for me), that I inadvertently read them again...and loved them just as much. My usual reviews contain the good, the bad and the ugly. In this case its truly all GOOD. Character development, plot, romance...great! If there were to be a complaint, it would be HEAT. However both novels wouldn't have been as phenomenal if there was more heat, thus not really a complaint. There was more story to enjoy verses a tiny bit of story between 20 page love scenes. OK...I take my complaint back! The love scenes were well written and just the right length.
In summary, BOTH "HERO" books were worth the five stars as they were as close to perfect as one can get. I wouldn't change a thing. Thank you LK...I will be purchasing more of your books to read and reread!
No, I will not edit my review... I'm old and tired...but thanks for reading it if you do.
